Bees & Corals: tank-grown corals and mystery pressure capsules

What is a frag plug and how do you use one?

A frag plug is a small base that a coral fragment (a "frag") is attached to. It gives the frag something stable to sit on, makes it easy to move and lets you push it into a plug rack, a rock hole or a frag stand.

What they are made of

Frag plugs are made of ceramic, plastic or other materials, and some are 3D printed. A plug normally has a flat top for the coral and a narrower stem or peg that fits a rack or a drilled hole.

We sell 3D printed frag plugs in packs of 5 for £1. They add to your coral order in the basket and ship in the same parcel.

How to attach a frag

  1. Dry the plug and the coral's base. Glue holds best on a dry surface. Keep the coral out of the water for as short a time as you can.
  2. Use a suitable glue. Gel cyanoacrylate (super glue gel) and reef epoxy putty are the usual choices. Use a small amount.
  3. Press the base onto the plug and hold for a few seconds, then return it to the water.
  4. Put it in a rack or on a rock in a spot that suits the species. Our PAR guide lists typical light ranges.

Tips

  • Rinse new plugs in clean water before they go in your tank.
  • Give each frag space to grow. A coral that encrusts onto the plug and spreads will need moving later.
  • Wear gloves when handling zoanthids, which can contain palytoxin.
